The relationship between listening and the object of listening can be conceptualised in diverse ways. Basic concepts like l'objet sonor, soundscape and l'effet sonore all refer to specific ways of listening: reduced listening, conscious listening and everyday listening. How might these and other concepts of listening be informed by technologies employed in the practise of listening to, editing and presenting sound? And how has emerging technologies like instruments for acoustical measurements, tape recorders or portable mp3-players reshaped aural engagement?
